Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, is a Sikh festival that celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. It is observed on the full moon day in the month of Kartik, which usually falls in November.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in Punjab, India, and he spent his life spreading the message of peace, love, and equality. He taught that there is only one God, and that all human beings are equal regardless of their caste, religion, or gender.

During Guru Nanak Jayanti, Sikhs around the world celebrate the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji by offering prayers and participating in religious processions. The celebrations usually begin with the Akhand Path, a non-stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs. This is followed by kirtan, the singing of devotional hymns, and langar, the communal sharing of food.

One of the main highlights of Guru Nanak Jayanti is the Nagar Kirtan, a colorful procession in which the Guru Granth Sahib is carried on a palanquin through the streets, accompanied by singing and dancing devotees. Many people also decorate their homes and gurdwaras (Sikh temples) with lights and flowers to mark the occasion.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is a time for Sikhs to reflect on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and to reaffirm their commitment to his message of peace, love, and equality. It is an important festival that is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion by Sikhs all over the world.
