Onam

Onam is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, a mythical ruler who is believed to visit Kerala during the festival. According to legend, Mahabali was a wise and just king who was loved by his people, but he was eventually banished to the underworld by the god Vishnu. On Onam, it is believed that Mahabali returns to Kerala to see his people, and the festival is celebrated to welcome him back.



During Onam, people decorate their homes with flowers, especially the traditional floral carpet called pookalam, and prepare special feasts with traditional dishes. There are also various cultural events and competitions, such as boat races, dance performances, and games.


One of the main attractions of Onam is the traditional dance called thiruvathira kali, which is performed by women around a lamp. Another popular activity is the onakkodi, which involves buying new clothes to wear on the day of Onam.
